When you don't have a job, you tend to use less gas.

Yes, this will slow the economy again. But our masters in DC will then pump trillions more of our taxes to stimulate growth, that slowed down because of their actions in promoting higher gas prices.

Ok, so we have increased conservation borne out of necessity, cars with some better mpg - both good things - and gas prices are still way too high. Brillian observation. So why is this news? WP must have needed some filler for a back page.

Our only way to combat higher prices seems to be to use less fuel. Our economy needs the price of fuel to drop.

Of course we're using less gas, it has gotten so expensive that we've had to modify how much we were driving.

Pete12: This is called conserving and that is what we need to do more of!
That use to be the case for getting lower gas prices. But since prices are too easily manipulated, and as we have experienced, greater supply of gas has no bearing on the price.

obama's policies are forcing the change and creating job losses at the same time!
If someone can't afford the price of gas does he really think they can afford to move to a higher housing area by moving closer to where they work and take transit???

9 years ago I paid 1.06 for a gallon of gas. The same station charges 3.95 for a gallon of gas now. Thank you Bush for your obsession with Wall Street deregulation and Obama for being all talk and no action when it comes to curbing speculation and setting position limits. Then again, Obama is almost always talk and no action when it comes to helping the poor and middle class.

Less demand may also be fueled (no pun intended) by the fact that higher prices have made it less affordable to drive thereby forcing natural conservation.

Less demand is probably in part to people retiring older less efficient vehicles in favor of newer more efficient vehicles.

This isn't news, at least not breaking news. When gas and food prices go up, people drive and eat less, much less, ok. That's the facts.

America has changed their ways with gas before and it didn't halt raising gas prices. Supply, demand and usage has absolutely NOTHING to do with the price of gas. When we use less gas the price goes up because the companies are not making enough. When we use more the price goes up because of lack of supply.

I find it funny and very sad. "Are American motorists finally changing their gas-guzzling ways?"
Are we all evil now because we had a way of life that was good and productive for 70 years and yes used oil as a means of getting everything done?
We have a media today that is trying everything possible to pit each other against one another, including the present administration.
How about working together and stop the Titles and name calling and just do what is in our best interest as a nation.

One thing we keep hearing from the media is "well look at what Europe pays for gas" etc. It's about time the media keeps their nose out , the speculators are not allowed to speculate with energy commodities and the US gets some "Leaders that care about their constituents" some things might really get better.

@djwhit - Obama is NOT on the way out (unfortunately) from the map I saw on one of the morning political shows. All he has to do is win one or two states that are uncertain right now (I think it was Colorado, New Mexico, or Virginia?) and he can even lose states like Iowa & Ohio and still win. He also has the 'incumbent advantage' (i.e. "The devil you know is better than the devil you don't know.") Romney is just too weak a competitor. Too bad they couldn't come up with a stronger candidate.
But on-topic, I agree with @Rich1430. There's just no way to win this game. You can slow down your driving, but there are still places you HAVE to drive, and the prices just continue to go up. Demand may be increasing at a slower rate, but in the end, world demand IS always increasing, driving prices higher.

You can' t win for losing anymore. Conserving fuel won't help. Fuel prices still go up as do food and other necessities in life. Employers sitting on millions and in some cases billions of dollars in profits and won't pay their emplyees enough to keep their heads above the poverty line.

Conserving will not have an impact on gas prices. Big oil just exports more of it at higher profits.
