New cars and trucks sold in the United States are getting an average of 24 miles per gallon of gasoline, the highest ever, researchers at the University of Michigan said on Tuesday.

The average fuel economy rating as shown by window stickers on new vehicles bought in March - including pickup trucks, SUVs, minivans and passenger cars - was 24.1 mpg, the researchers found. That was up 20 percent from the average of 20 mpg in October 2007, they said.

Hmmmmm. The car I bought in 1995 got an average of 28 mpg (33 on hwy). Now the newer cars get 24 mpg, and that's up? How does that compute??

20 percent increase will only help if gas prices drop or remained the same since 2007.

I had a 2002 Grand Prix that got 33 mpg highway. A comparably sized new car is not much better.

There are lies, damned lies, and statistics LOL! 20% increase sounds wonderful, until you see the base line. From 20 to 24 US mpg--not all that impressive, but put as 20%, it sounds fantastic!

If you want 50 mpg now, just buy a used pre-2007 VW diesel, preferably with a manual transmission. I bought a used wagon for much less than half the cost of a new one, and which now has over 218K km (ie, 136,000 miles) and the darn thing just keeps on chugging away, getting 66+ mpg (ie, 55+ US gallon mpg) in the summer, and bottoming out at about 50+ mpg (ie, 42 US gallon mpg) in very cold snowy weather, with snow tires on). Thats with loading it up, driving too fast, towing trailers, stop and go in city, all mixed--so that is as bad as it gets.

DON'T get one with an automatic (they tend to be crap with diesels), and drive it like you stole it as the saying goes, every once in a while, and it will last you decades. Diesels do, given half a chance. The post 2006 VW diesels still cost too much, and have way too much hp so the mileage isn't as high. Trust me, you can drive an older diesel VW TDI at well over 125 mph if you can get away with it, so the extra hp isn't needed.

If you like an automatic, then get a used Prius, and drive the wheels off it for a few hundred thousand--just don't drive it too fast, because their mileage starts sucking the more and faster you drive it over 60 mph. Still very good for a car, just not as good for a hybrid. If you drive fast and on the highway most of the time, get a diesel, not a gasoline-electric hybrid. They are the most reliable hybrids going, as a taxi fleet out in British Columbia has proved.

note, over a million kilometers is over 620,000 MILES. 700,000 km on a battery pack is 435,000 MILES

Since I got to Tucson about six weeks ago, I have seen more older.and rusty vehicles than in many years before. I just don't think most people here have the money to buy a pricey new car. My previous roomies in New Mexico have. A gas guzzling Yukon, would love to buy a new car, but their life situation and high gas prices sap most of the income after rent, food, and high medical expenses. Many of us are broke, myslef included. So I ride public transportation for 42$ a month and show vbig oil and speculators the bird.

We could go on for awhile, but the trend is down size.
Not many road guzzlers left.

The cash for clunkers program must have helped raise the average mileage.

THe comparison goes... if cars had evolved as computers we'd pay have for twice as much and they'd get 100 mpg...
