Most people would probably keep what they're familiar with.
At least until the new becomes the familiar.

I'd switch from gas to a plug-in hybrid, if they ever make a hybrid right, with a motor in each wheel, a medium-sized battery and a small engine/generator combination to charge the batteries. Full-time 4WD and no transmission or drive train to cause mechanical problems.
I don't care what powers the hybrid engine, as long as it's efficient and economical. Could even be a fuel cell, instead of the engine/generator.

A hybrid leaves a larger carbon footprint then a Hummer H3. Until they come up with a better way to make and dispose of the batteries they are using now, there is no way I would drive a hybrid or electric vehicle.

Please don't go to a Honday Hybrid, it is only a "mild" hybird, I drove it, and tested it, it is like it is an unfinished Science Project, the 3000 you save compared to a "Full" Hybrid is worth every penny, I will be glad to explain the difference to you.

I am not exactly sure. Why is it that we have to drive cars and trucks that go so little on Gas anyway? Is it something that the car companies are not telling us.
Well sure it is.

I have gasoline capabilities, in my car, now. If I were to upgrade, I would go to a Honda Hybrid-type vehicle. I love where the new technology is going, it's one of the few things that Obama has been 'behind' that I actually agree with :o)

I think that when my car dies 10 or 20 years from now, the most common option will be CNG. And that might be my choice.

Hybrid batteries are very expensive, but I have yet to hear of any actually needing replacing. So far they seem to be exceptionally well engineered. Now as they grow in popularity, we'll see if that track record holds...

i have heard that hybrids batters only last up to 10 years and the cost around 10 grand to replace. so anyone know the exact amount for one of these batters. if its true its not very cost effective. when a gas engine will last 200000 or more and desiels last over a million. years.

Wow so many people want to keep gas instead of higher mileage options like hybrids. No wonder gas prices are going up. People want to use more gas to drive.

I will still wait to see what garbage comes from that big house in DC before switching. I still believe we are only getting part of the story through our skewed media, just to sensationalize the "horrors" going on in the world, while the true facts are buried in some report on page 3472, never to see the media spotlight. But just my opinion!

Dave, diesel is more expensive for a number of reasons, but usually it's because taxes are higher. We're paying the same taxes that the big rigs pay for their extra wear and tear on highways. So we tread (relatively) lightly but pay the same.
It stinks, but that's life. I've got an 05 TDI and have a lifetime average around 46.5 MPG, but that's an older model without the emissions gubbins that make the emissions cleaner. I figure if I can't kill myself in a closed garage with what it puts out now, it's clean enough, lol. ;)
Me, I'll stick with diesel because for the foreseeable future I'll still be traveling a lot more interstates and back roads that crowded city streets. Around here it's priced similar to midgrade or premium which isn't too awfully bad, but it still hurts when I see places charging 50 cents or more for diesel over RUG.

This time last year I switched from a big, 10 year oldd SUV to VW TDI (Diesel). My MPG went from 18 highway to 42 highway, although diesel is a bit more expensive than regular (never have understood that one).
A couple of years ago, when gas was $4.00 gal, I would often hit the $100 fill up max at some of the DC stations in the old' SUV. Quite a shock to the system and really got me thinking about trading.
Before my purchase, as a test, I rented a Prius for a round trip from DC to Raleigh NC. At 6'3"", I found the Prius a little cramped, but otherwise reasonable on the highway. I think it makes particularly sense in the city where most of the driving will be in the electric mode. On the highway however, I got about the same mileage as I do with my diesel, although oNCe you factor in the lower gas price, it would be cheaper to run as a highway vehicle.
I guess the outstanding question about the hybrid technoldogy is the cost to replace the battery pack. Anyone had that experieNCe?
