In the buddy profile you ask about what movies you like , what about the music you like ? Time to update this site again . A little at a time.

BLT, the "tos" are the least of your problems since it was clear that you were joking about them.

First, and it's off topic, I don't believe that, as SUVFan said, "that many, perhaps even most, college students today consider text messages to be more formal and email to be less so."

On the contrary, most people, of all stratum, consider text messaging to be informal, and e-mail to be more formal. Most people consider e-mail to be a “grown-up medium," and, for teenagers and students specifically, not ideal for day-to-day communication with their peers, according to a recent study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project and the University of Michigan.

As of, I believe, two years ago, half the teens a year ago, half the teens sent 50 or more text messages a day, one in three sent more than 100 texts a day (according to a national survey of teens and nine focus groups in four U.S. cities, noting that "these quick and casual messages dominate how they communicate, and e-mail has taken a back seat – with teens citing the platform as a “formal” and “grown-up” way to be in touch with adults."

However, the discussion for this thread isn't about grammar and communication, it's to discuss changing the profile to include the additional "like" of music.

Now, back to the topic that BLTHNDR started, if you will.

I doubt if you will find anything in any terms of use for most web sites regarding spelling and grammar.

This is still in the wrong category. It should be in SAWSI since it is a web site improvement.

BLTHNDR's post on 7/10 was nothing more than a poor attempt at humor and had nothing to do with the OP.

Here's the rub, Scoutmaster: Nothing in the terms of use of this site even suggests that correct grammar or spelling are encouraged or even important. And I believe message board posts are closer to text messages than say, email. Yet I understand that many, perhaps even most, college students today consider text messages to be more formal and email to be less so.

While some of us who post here certainly value good grammar and spelling, there's no shortage of others who would disagree and believe posts with all kinds of grammatical faults and misspellings should stand proudly side by side a flawless post.

That really brings me full circle to the subject brought up by the OP. If there's going to be a profile page that allows for members to note their personal interests, I see no reason to draw a line between movies and TV shows on the one hand while excluding music and books on the other.

I can understand that in text messages SUVFan, but these are not text messages. And I totally agree regarding tattoos and piercings.

Scoutmaster, while I don't disagree, quite sadly, it can almost be considered a different language today.

I saw a text the other day from a younger person. It contained no capital letters, no commas, no periods or other punctuation except for two apostrophes that, most surprisingly, were used properly. It would have been at least 10 sentences long if properly punctuated. There's no point in trying to change the person who wrote it.

I guess I'd rather see kids expressing themselves poorly in this manner than getting tattoos or body piercings . . . .

Pay off those bets, folks. It's also a YouTube channel: IF THE MUSIC IS TO LOUD, YOUR TO OLD.

Spelling, punctuation, and the like seem to be for us old folks, too.

He was referring that the bumper said " If the music is to loud your to old". Also, there shouldn't be a space after the quote.

I thought I posted this in the (talk back to us) topic (NO CAPS)..... but I am sure they will read your comments and any that follow. They may do something or not. On the lighter side..saw a bumper sticker today that said " If the music is to loud your to old" on a geo

>Sorry, but while I don't think a music entry's necessary, and don't thiink we need a movie entry, let's discuss the "suggestion" or the comment to the moderators, rather than the forum.<

I would like to see it expanded, but upon further thought, I think the change should be simple -- Just expand the existing movie category to "Movies, Music & Books". That requires no additional programing, just an edit of the current title.

I find the details in the profile useful sometimes when considering a buddy request, or even just to figure out where someone is coming from.

If people are here for the points they are here for the wrong reason.

The OP is a suggestion for an improvement. That is the category this should be post in, not this category.

" People are mostly here it seems just for points."

Have you ever been in the Off Topic area, GG? Some permanent relationships have been made there.

The way the OP stated the lead post, it's a talk back to us post. Sometimes the lines are fuzzy between this category and SAWSI. But the OP is asking for an explanation about why they have a spot for movies and not music. The OP dies proceed to suggest a change, but because they seem to be asking if there's a reason why things are the way they are, there's more than enough to keep it here.

Not convinced? Consider the type of stuff that might get posted on profiles as "music"? That might not be an improvement at all . . . .

That aside, I thank BLTHNDR for initiating a good discussion topic about something that's been staring me in the face for years. I can't think of any reason for the structure other than oversight and agree it should be added.

He can't be talking about me.

First, I generally only provide positive feedback; whether you agree with it or not is another issue, but it's positive feedback.

Second, he can't be talking about me because I've been listening to great music. Frank Sinatra's "In The Wee Small Hours", Mississippi John Hurt's "Avalon Blues: The Complete 1928 Okeh Recordings", Amanda McBroom's "Dreaming". Next will be Willie Nelson's "And Then I Wrote", maybe something by Stan Getz and by Rod McKuen with the Anita Kerr Singers.

Like I said; he can't be talking about me.

People:

As critical as I am of people posting in the wrong forums (and I've been slammed for being a "forum cop" or worse, in much worse words), this is simply one of the things that can be either-or. It's asking the moderators a question with the hint of a suggestion, or it's a suggestion that they're bringing up in the discussion categories the moderators have opened for..discussion. I'm fine either way.

But...and it's a big but. Why, just because the buddy profile may indicates movies you like, do you need an additional entry for music you like? Why, for that matter, do we even need to indicate movies. But, if you're going to indicate movies and music, what about writers and books? What about American heroes you admire? What about listing your favorite Gas Buddy members? What about... Well, you get the idea. Does anyone really care about what movies another member likes, and that the profile posting of the movie - or the music - will be the start of something really special in the way of friendship that a white board or follow-up to a buddy request won't? I mean, are you really going to message someone and say, "Hey, I saw you like Gone with the Wind and Gary P. Nunn's 'The Old Rocking Chair... Maybe we can get together and talk gas prices."

Sorry, but while I don't think a music entry's necessary, and don't thiink we need a movie entry, let's discuss the "suggestion" or the comment to the moderators, rather than the forum.

Considered this to be posted by a "Forum Cop" (as I've been called for simply trying to keep things in the most appropriate forum).

So by your reckoning, there's no need for Suggest a Website Improvement. In fact why have categories of topics at all? Let's just merge all of them together and let you hunt for the topics you're interested in!

To me at least, this isn't much of a social website, since most of the features and resources are focused on fuel prices. It also shows in the lack of thought that goes into most forum posts. People are mostly here it seems just for points.
