Gasbuddy Retiree Forum

If you are a retiree or about to retire this topic is for you. I have said many times my most boring day being retired is better than my best day working. I planned my 2003 retirement at age 55 many years in advance and it paid off. I have a pension and Social Security that aids and abets my comfortable life style. My home is paid off and I drive a 3 year old car I bought new. I do volunteer work 2 or 3 days a week that I enjoy that gets me out of the house. Life's been good to me so far.

Fellow retirees are you enjoying retirement? Let the discussion begin.

sylv, Sorry about the way you had to retire. If SS is all you can get go for it. I do volunteer work twice a week and it's the best job I never get paid for. Good luck.

Forced retirement due to fall at work May 2011 that placed me on workers comp, and then my lousy boss fired me when I couldn't get back to work full-time. I have been recieving workers comp weekly checks and getting ready to apply for social security disability. I am one of the smart ones -- my mortgage is paid off and I live comfortably on 3 acres and have some rental income too. But I wasn't planning on being retired, and I am trying to find my niche now. I am doing daily exercise and walking which is keeping me in good health and more fit plus I lost 30 lbs. I would love to do some road trips but don't have a partner to do that with. My cousin got me to join her monthly bunco she has at the senior citizen center. I've done a couple of clinical trials that paid $100 for just one visit which I thought was pretty cool; have considered volunteering a couple days of the week, but think I will wait awhile.

Coming up on two years now. Still miss the job, but getting used to the fact it's not one for an old guy. Hit the gym 4 times a week, and divide my left over time between building radios and working in my small machine shop. Come summer, I hope to be back doing stone walls.
Now, I can do anything I want, as long as my wife says it's OK.

I'm not doing bad at all. Receiving a pension for life plus monthly IRA withdrawals. Banker approved me for a $30,000 car loan I turned out not needing.

I've been retired for 7 years now. I am finally getting a chance to do all the travelling I've always wanted to do, but couldn't. So far, I've been to Canada, Italy, Spain, and France. I've driven cross-country 3 times already. I just can't get enough of it.

Malcm, "don't fool with my entitlements" could have been a coming of age point in your life.

Today I did a load of clothes, hung them on the clothes line and washed the car which is as busy as I wanted to be.

And a funny side note is that when Social Security was first proposed, there were cries of "NO - it's SOCIALISM!!" Same with Medicare. But now, of course, it's " Don't fool with my entitlements!"

I've been retired 7.5 years, and if I had to go back to work, I'd quit. I certainly find things to do when I want to, or do nothing at all. Maybe I'll go down to NC and work part time for DH.

ill never retire!!! my grandma is 92 and she worked until 78 when they finally forced her to sit down then she worked like hell at home. She says to stay young ya gotta stay at it. At 92 she looks 60 and still lives at home alone and handles her shit.

Thats what I want for my years to come

Have been retired for about 18 months and have been busier than ever. Have purchased a second home in the US southwest, so now am working on fixing that place up for the winter golfing season.

Being able to travel on short notice is one of the many perks of retirement.

My younger brother just signed up for Social Security at age 62. He plans to continue working as long as he can. Without a pension that is a given.
