Two of our 'out-door cats' had an 'engorging' tick, which I removed! Warmer Indian Summer days bring those critters out! Yuck! Oh, then there are fleas! So we've gotta 'treat those kitties'! Frontline...purchased 'online' is much more reasonable, too!

It's not rained much since my last post and with lawns so parched/brown, our garden is like an oasis that is 'lush' compared to 'nothing else to eat'! We had no 'Pest-Killing Winter' that the insects have descended upon my garden! I'm amazed to see striped Cucumber beetles chewing up a squash that came up by accident...then the only squash plant I actually planted disappeared in a day or so..are now eating tomato stems/foliage..and latched onto my green beans!
I've decided not to plant anything but Okra, or late peas, since the bugs seem to not be bothering the peas that haven't dried up! Yes, I've tried to maintain a consistent Organic/no pesticides..and haven't had time to apply any 'organic-acceptable' deterrents! Maybe Diatomaceous Earth! I dust my sock tops/boots with powdered Sulfur to stop ticks and chiggers...and it helps deter pests on our cats when they rub against my legs, too!

We have had a relatively Dry-to-near-Drought until it finally rained! But with little water being 'caught' in containers around our farmhouse/garden, we've not had the 'skeeters' yet! Oh, after the rain, they came out that evening!
It was the Ticks that have 'Ticked me off'! 48 so far that I've counted!~ Now with the First Day of Summer...the Heat is On!
Yes, the lower humidity has helped hold down the 'skeeters' from coming out in the daytime! Deer Flies...terrible, too! And I hate DEET sprays! Predicted Buggy Summer Across the US!

Heard frogs 'singing' last evening....and then a 'skeeter' tried landing on my leg..I was out raking sweetgum burs off the lawn...they are nasty to step on in your bare feet!

Fleas on cats and dogs don't spend the Winter hibernating, especially on my very long-haired/fluffy cats!! NO, my 'sweeties' don't scratch as much as in the Summer/warmer months! But I notice them scratching because they do come inside the house during COLD evenings!
BTW, just scanned down this thread for previous postings! "Probedude2"....sorry to have overlooked your ?uestion? regarding our farm/name! Ask my wife; I get excited over simple things, which helped me draw national park visitors to see what I was 'trying to Show and Tell' about when I was there in Glacier National Park as a Ranger/naturalist! Exclamation marks actually 'fall short' of my excitement, sometimes! Our daughter, Maranatha, was born while I was leading a hike up to Avalanche Lake. But her name is symbolic of the excitement so many have expressed over the centuries since it was used in Scripture! First Corinthians 16verse22(I-Cor. 16:22) is our source!

"Bear with me as I bare my angst!" Just reading the story and comments really [bugged] me!! So my 'rant' first:
Knee-jerks and those who 'react to their yelps'..is my reaction to the Lakewood(OH) Patch article; after you read this, I hope you are registered to vote! Oh, check the 'motives' of those who 'say they want to represent/help us'!! Then go out and VOTE based not on 'campaign promise/allusions'! Talk to candidates themselves (or discover others who 'have done so'..Ours IS Still a representative/elected government, locally all the way to Washington D.C.)
Most of us GasBuddies post gas prices to help ourselves and while were at it, help our neighbors $ave on ga$/fuel price$. We 'also vote with our wallet'! Wish citizens would be 'wary' of myopic do-good-ers, too!
In this 'local news'....just three vocal, visible 'neighbors' find a 'bug/problem' in their neighborhood and end up Over-killing the rest of their fellow citizens' freedom! (USING-a-SLEDGE-HAMMER-to-KILL-a-GNAT-Mentality!?) Glad I don't live within breathing distance of Lakewood OH!! Just wonder if I 'sneezed' within Lakewood's jurisdiction would I be arrested! They might want to shut down our parks; no campfires or barbeques?!! The story(lousy/slanted reporting in my opinion!! "Residents Fired Up Wood-Burning Furnaces" - Lakewood Ohio
P.S. What flummoxes me is that "Dirty Aviston" didn't bother to give us links to the [warnings from manufacturers for those wood burners!) - But Jeremy D'Herville comments...what should have been included to 'balance' out the story:
"It still amazes me that all these furnaces have no cowling. Some cowls have been proven to effectively reduce visible emissions to zero on enclosed heaters designed for indoor use. Smoke is caused when the combustion gases cool from the atmosphere. The faster they cool, the courser and more visible the particulate matter. No doubt the over-indoctrinated, over-produced environmental academia will keep finding smaller, more harmful particulate matter to support the world's cleanest and next wealthiest industry after fossil fuels - electricity supply. If we're to keep the freedoms of self sufficiency then wood boiler and indoor wood stove manufacturers MUST keep vigilant. Smoke - trap it, compress it & combust it, working from the tip of the exhaust pipe down - while maintaining the optimum combustible heat in the furnace. Don't throw away sustainable, self sufficiency due to a few precious people - in this case, 3 of them. Just solve the issue of smoke and get them off this irritating bandwagon propped-up by other energy providers. Think about protection during natural disasters, power outages and fuel shortages. Ignore the propaganda and stick to common sense. Clean, efficient, sustainable, self-sufficient wood energy is very achievable. Heating is too important to be wrapped up in green market politics. Corporations and investors playing monopoly will put you at greater market dependence and greater risks to your family safety."

Nope; I was a transplant from Arizona, where I retired from the US Army. South Philadelphia was my original stomping grounds. No ticks there, but we had a quite different kind of pest to deal with.

We seemed to see Intellicast's Radar trace storms around us until The DELUGE w/ 4+" in a few days! We'd had little rain in July...and that encourages grasshoppers to thrive...and EAT anything green, as my garden!
But after The DEULUGE a few weeks ago, I had buckets w/ leaves/compost to mix as I continued to dig/plant and expand my garden! MOSQUITOES have used any little 'cup, container or bucket' to breed...and that's the 'rub or ITCH' that will follow Hurricane Irene!!
BTW, the ?Final? Tally on TICKS?? 96, so far...and Fall can also be a time to get 'tick-ed on', even if you use OFF!! Yes, puns intended!
Oh, "mincemeat26"...thanks for keeping this thread 'alive'! Did you grow up in Jackson County? Fascinating history of charcoal used in iron production, IIRC! "Buckeye Furnace State Historical Park" The broad, meandering Teays River Valley that was flooded during the Pleistocene continental glaciation is visible from an Aerial or Terrain view! The remnant of the Teays River is called the New River Gorge, which is a National Park! When the Teays was blocked, the Southern boundary of Ohio/River was cut by rushing glacial melt/outwash! OK, I just put on my historical/Naturalist Smokey Bear Hat! RangerTom, here! "Curious...wanna 'dig deeper'? Buckeye Furnace regional history! Fascinating!

The Ohio state entomologist in Columbus thought I was flat wrong when I reported finding Lone Star ticks in Jackson County. I sent them a few dead bodies, and that brought confirmation and a team of bug collectors to my farm. The Lone Star ticks were evidently hitch-hikers in a load of tires hauled up from Louisiana. They hadn't been seen in Ohio before I stumbled across them.
Otherwise, dog ticks were the scourge in my fields. Keeping the grass cut low helped some, but only because the ticks couldn't hang out on long blades where they could latch onto socks and trousers.

I'm wondering how many ticks we actually missed!! Our black cat had one, but it was on Samuel's chin and getting large enough I noticed it! But 'kitten, John' has been pestered the most!....total ticks we gotten off...whatever reached 91 yesterday!!
The Sulfur seems to be working; getting the meadow mowed may also have helped, too! Re: the poster from Las Vegas, "too bad!..sorry to hear you say that!"

We have experienced EIGHT Deer Ticks so far this Spring here at Maranatha!Farm. And I pulled three off our Big Kitten "John" who reminds me of ASLAN, the Great Lion....from C.S.Lewis "Chronicles of Narnia".
But I think Aslan would tell those ticks to "Bug Off!"

I'm "clueless" why my thread was moved to "Off Topic" Forum! Without 'warning'...If I hadn't pegged it to my "Favorite Topics List" it could have been lost....."Ticked Off", too!
Maybe because I'm now Really TICKED OFF!! Even with the Heat Wave, I found Tick #28 crawling on my tummy! So I added 'her' to my growing collection!
TWENTY EIGHT!! Too, Too many!! You'd be Ticked off, too!

We have a white cat! Ticks show up much easier...We had her spayed..she won't let us get near her to pick them off!
But I still keep getting them crawling...fortunately before they attach to me! #25 so far! Really Ticks me off, too!

Yesterday...then today again! The TickAttack Count is up to 23!
No, I'm not double-counting! I wish it was that easy to explain my angst away! Maybe with some rain...but that brings the 'skeeters' back in a feeding frenzy!! HELP.....I feel like I'm drowning! And I don't live in the Jungle!! But I wonder...........

Hola, "ProbeDude"....I'm just down the pike from you here in Newcomerstown!
No-see-ums, some might call those 'mites'...and IF you have even the slightest sunburn, while slapping those critters away, you end up hurting even more!
Today I pulled off Tick #21...a collection I've kept in a bottle 'just in case' the vet or doctor needs to verify 'Lime disease' or whatever! I was sitting at this computer entering a post and scratched the back of my right leg...and Viola'... Talk about 'ticking me off'!!
This is Too Much!! I'd been out in the yard just a bit earlier...

MOSQUITO PLAGUE! I'm sure it is nothing like the swarms that plagued Pharoah before his hand was forced to "Let my people go!"...said Moses
But I'm beginning to 'relate' when I visited nearly a dozen stores by phone or car looking for Mosquito Repellent...that doesn't have DEET. I'm leery of anything potentially to upset/trigger the resurgence of leukemia! Lowes' Drug Mart, Rite Aide, pharmacies, sporting goods stores, WallyWorld...no one has what I want: Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus! Only on-line...but I need it last month! And everyone is complaining along with me about 'how bad the mosquitoes are, even in the daytime..full sunlight! HELP!! I feel like I'm drowning....

Just walking outside to the mailbox....SWARMED by "skeeters"!!! It is miserable here in the valley of the Tuscarawas! So much rainfall...wet foliage...I'm looking for any possible 'standing water' for them to breed/reproduce their hoards!!
I have considered a Beekeeping outfit that has a veiled net to cover my head and neck! But talk about 'sweatsville' under that outfit of long sleeves, trousers thick enough to stop those 'skeeters' beaks from drilling away at me!!
Even our poor 'outdoor cats' had 'skeeters' landing on their ears where their hair is thinner! Any suggestions? HELP!! We need HELP!!

I found our FIFTEENTH Tick today on one of our kittens; how many have we missed!!
But I called the local animal shelter to check on 'fixing' our Hannah Ruth, who appears to be pregnant again with Samuel and another stray cat! She was still nursing her four kittens!!
But I also heard from our neighbors beside the Animal Shelter...Ticks are Really Bad this Spring!! I believe it!!

Maybe 'this is what the cat drug in'...... But our front porch has become a 'haven' for the cats! Since they 'prowl' in the grass/weeds...and they may prove 'un-tasty'....
Well, I found the FOURTEENTH Tick 'just waiting to latch onto some unsuspecting' animal(beast) or my wife or me or our visitors! It was on the side of a five-gallon bucket I use to put leaves, sticks..organic matter that we add to the compost bin or bury in the garden!
WOW!! This latest 'revelation' is bugging me!! I should be so thankful that I've spotted this many BEFORE they do any greater damage to us or our furry or feathery friends!
Has anyone else seen any ticks so far this year??

WOW! More ticks...my count is up to TEN! And if you read this article from NASA, it includes the diseases the nasty little critters spread...to us humans! NOT GOOD!! Lyme Disease..not really curable, for starters!
Now NASA can help 'spot' Tick Habitat by satellite tracking! Well, read the articleTracking Ticks Via Satellite

The Ticks are in 'full force' around our farm! I just took another tick off our white cat...a total of Five; another one was on one of her little kittens! Most hadn't attached yet!
Mosquitoes have been biting now that we've had rainfall! Lightening bugs are starting to 'come out at night' in our Eastern Ohio farm, too!

Hey, Dave....'stop bugging me!' :D
Actually I tried to 'interject' a wee bit of humor in the thread! Sort of 'take the sting out of getting bugged!'
When I was down in Cuba on our church mission team, I imagine that 'their undercover agents' were bugging us, too! Smoke from their diesel exhaust might cause them to choke and cough, disclosing their schemes. Seriously, Cuba has an air pollution problem! I feel for those who ride bicycles, as well as horses that have to breath at a higher rate because of the exertion!

This is scary! I awoke this morning....was I dreaming of 'ticks' crawling on me! I got up 'just itching' to know! I've been collecting them in a jar so I have a count! I hope I don't sound 'para-annoid-ing'!! Ooops! Forgot to mention here that I love PUNS! That's a warning! LOL
A "TickAttack" in my sub-conscience!?
Certainly nothing I would wish for my friends, even for those who attack me, either! Oh, for eyes in the back of my head! NO...we are to be 'foreward looking' but never forget to recognize our past mistakes so we don't repeat them! Again! Again!

I've taken two ticks off our white cat, Hannah Ruth! And the second tick was crawling on my arm yesterday while I was typing in a previous post on another thread. Yes, we live in the country...but it's purty out here!;)
The Virginia Bluebells have been glorious on our farm, too! As I type this, the sun bursts forth...(between the snowflakes)? Well, maybe the frostflakes by morning! Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! RangerTom, here!
