i have a 1989 nissan 240sx with no remote transmitter, so I open the doors with my key all the time...

BUT,

my newer 2002 quest minivan has a remote & I can't think of when I used the key to the lock cylinders on the front doors or trunk!

-------------------

basically, a reminder to lubricate them with graphite lube and "excersise" the lock cylinders with my key this spring... in case the remote's batteries die out

cogas, "All the time. I don't have a remote setup. I did have a remote on a 2002 Explorer a few years ago. I still used the key about 99% of the time."

you can get a replacement key fob transmitter on eBay for cheaper than the stealership... & the seller also provides instructions to program it for your vehicle

It's been a while. I had to use the key when the lock mechanism was binding initially when the car was new.

I always use my remote, I don't worry about locking my keys in that way.

Every Day! I don't have an automatic lock / unlock for my 2001 Subaru. I'm not sure if it was even ever set up to have one.

Hi ricebike,

Up to three weeks ago, it had been nearly ten years since I used a key to unlock my doors. Now I own a 2010 Ford Ranger XL that has no FOB, just a key (and crank windows I might add). It took a bit of getting used to, but it is simple and it works.

I also must have gone brain dead in my last post about WD-40. WD means Water Dispersant and the 40 is the amount of attempts to get the formula right.

Take care :-). MGY

My car doesn't have a key. No keyslot in the door or trunk either. I couldn't use a key if I wanted to.

My current car came with the remote, I purchased it in September of 2007. I may have used a key to open it once and the trunk once. Its been so long ago I couldn't tell you when it was.

wife's vehicle didn't want to open w/ the key fob...

seems the battery was drained a bit because she left something plugged into the power outlet (what used to be called the cigarette lighter socket for you older folks)

so i used the key to open the door & start the vehicle

Years ago. Seriously, I don't think I've owned a car that didn't have a key fob to lock/unlock the doors since sometime back in the 90s.

Hello ricebike. For clarity sake, I was agreeing with you about the graphite being the best for locks :-). My Father now gone 25 years gave me a container of the dry graphite. I still use it and always remember he gave it to me.

I wish I could find the article I read some time ago about all the uses of WD-40. You can even order it in 55 gallon drums. I've forgotten what the WD stands for, but the 40 is the amount of attempts to get it right. When I was stationed on Okinawa, we used WD-40 all the time to keep our motorcycles from corroding from the salt air. It worked well with the cables, locks and various pivot points. The article was mentioning some of its uses and people actually use it on bad body joints (e.g. knees) and claim it works. It also removes gum, tar, bird droppings, etc. Great product!

Been a long time, probably 10 years + with the Vette. Wouldn't know if the
key even works, never tried it.

My winter beater doesn't have remote locks, nor does my '72 LTD or '71 Buick, so I use the key all the time. In fact, I'm so much in the habit of doing so, I don't think to use the remote in either of our other cars.

It as been years. I use the FOB.

Hello ricebike. Graphite is the best for locks (don't forget the ignition lock). If you don't have it WD-40 works well also. It can be used on the door hinges and won't create a greasy mess. WD-40 is fish oil based.
