Faulty Pump Adds 'Ghost' gallons
The station's owner needs an attitude adjustment. Instead of apologizing for the error, he disses the victim for "having nothing better to do than complain" >:-(

some stations just dont deserve to be in business regardless of the brand of gas. Workers act like you are interrupting their lives by buying gas

There is one SE of Dallas I've boycotted since 2002!!! I don't know if I can mention their name/place specifically since I'm new to the forum, but I know I can tell you all what happened!

I got out to get gas (mind you, I'd been to this store/station before so no probs until....) and forgot that I had a latch inside the car that opened the little opening to get to the gas cap. So I went back around, flipped the latch, got the gas cap open and got my gas. I went in to pay, the old coot said, "are ya payin' for the other $2.xx (forgot what the cents were) worth too??" I asked, "what do you mean?" He said, "you got $2.xx too!" I told him, "no I didn't." "I just got the $(whatever other amount) and that was it." He said, "I know you did 2 rounds of gas!" I told him I didn't, that I didn't even have the little door opened and I had to flip the latch. He basically said in front of everybody in the store that I was trying to be a drive-off!! I couldn't believe it! I put a $20 on the counter, and told him he obviously needed the money worse than me!!! I've never darkened their door since. EVER. I've had some ornery folks wait on me before, and some bordered on being a-h'es but this one was the *worst* by far. There's too many other places to stop at on the way down that road to worry about his grubby a$$ anyway.

While I am NOT one for bigger government, more regular and UNSCHEDULED enforcement really would be worth a few bucks from my taxes.

I'm sure that the "owner is honest" and it was true that "the amount of money and gallons pumped always match" but due to this malfunction, at the end of the year he would have sold 11,763 gallons for every 10,000 gallons he purchased.(assuming an empty tank and a nozzle shut-off at 18 gal.) Had this gone unnoticed until next years weights and measures inspection the owner would have had a very profitable year. Makes you wonder how easy these devices are to tamper with and if it would have been noticed sooner if the error had gone the other way.

Every pump should have a sticker on it with a toll free number to call if you suspect any errors. Pumps are supposed to be checked and calibrated periodically by a State Agency to ensure full 'weights and measures' compliance. Call the number if you suspect any errors and report the station. Inform the station attendant/owner if you want but CALL THE NUMBER AND REPORT.

Makes you wonder if the pump was tampered with intentionally to do this, or if at least the station owner new about and did nothing to have it repaired since it was in his favor.

Yes, pumping up the prices and not pumping in the gas is a real rip-off. How did this end, anyway? I live in Canada and never heard of such dishonesty ever and I am a healthy, senior lady whom is choosing to walk more these days because on our low monthly income my husband & I cannot afford to drive our older model Blazer.

Easter Blessings to all you fellow Gas Buddies out there!!

My personal favorite is when people come into the store saying they had gasoline, and they didn't, but they insist they did and hand you the $25.00, but they didn't because they didn't turn the pump on, and washed their windows, that's really funny.

A good reminder that we all need to know the capacity of the fuel tank on what we are driving, even if it's a rental vehicle. If not having received any other complaints other than from this lady is a true statement, it's simply because most people don't know how large their fuel tank is and don't pay attention during and after refueling. Most people just pay and leave. If people still paid with real money rather than with plastic, it might be a different story.

"It's been more than a month and no one has really jumped on the bandwagon, so I guess I'll resign myself to the fact that
a) we have no members from the southbridge area"

Which is probably why it was suggested by a couple of members that this should have been posted in your local forum. I'm almost 1,000 miles away. Did you really expect me to meaningfully participate in a boycott of this station?

I am convinced the attendant's attitude was a reflection of the owner's. I used to pump gas myself, and my boss certainly would have fired me if I had displayed that kind of arrogance to a customer. Moreover, why was the owner not involved in this dispute? That "attendant" seems to be more than a mere attendant.

The arrogant "this won't break us" reply was certainly true of the $10 refund, but I'm thinking his attitude would be adjusted by a drop in business. Nobody with that type of attitude towards his customers deserves to remain in business, so while nobody has suggested a kneecapping, it would not break my heart to drive those arrogant SOBs out of business - let him sell the station to someone who has a better service-oriented attitude.

As for the reserve tank red herring, this is easily dismissed by the fact that the pumps were proved to be defective. The story would never have made it to the paper if that were not the case.Anyways, this is a dead issue. It's been more than a month and no one has really jumped on the bandwagon, so I guess I'll resign myself to the fact that
a) we have no members from the southbridge area
or
b) drivers have no problem with arrogant attendants who intimidate customers with actual complaints

I would never have given this a second look if the "attendant" had apologized to the customer for the problem, thanked her for pointing it out, and cheerfully refunded her money. He was, after all, getting off rather cheaply - how long had those defective pumps been inflating his profits?

1) it wasn't the owner, it as an employee
2) yes, the employee could have handled the situation much better...
3) it's a he said/she said...of course her side of the store she sounds like a saint...but trust me, as an employee for a gas station it's very very rare that the customer is polite in any way shape or form, esp when they believe they have been ripped off.
4) as much as I hate to say, yes this does happen on rare occasions and it is always a faulty pump (not a crooked company) and unfortunately until the customer says something there really is no way for the store to know.

However in my personal experience I spend 95% of the day "arguing politely" with people that want to argue about how they were over charged or they were charged but their gas gage hasn't moved or (insert complaint over price here)...

It was an unfortunate event, yes the attendant made matters worse, but remember there's always two sides to every story and all we are hearing is her side (because we as an employee aren't allowed to talk to the media)... but think about this...really if you were over charged is your first thought, let me take a picture and call the police?

"“I was trying to show him how the pump could have malfunctioned, if my car’s tank is only 18 gallons.”

She said the attendant said, “The pump doesn’t lie,” and threatened to have her prosecuted if she disputed the charge." "

Notice she never mentioned that she said she was going to dispute the charge but brought up the attendants response (a bad response on their behalf and obviously a complete lie...you can't prosecute someone for disputing a charge)

Now lastly...ok so her car holds 18 gal...+ a reserve tank...we never did hear how low her gas was...was she on empty? Was she driving on empty of a while?? How much does her reserve tank hold? IF the car was on empty and she'd driven on empty for a while then yes, 21 gals would be correct...18 gal to fill the tank + a few extra gals to fill the reserve tank.

reb01501,

First, let's get the facts straight. According to the story, there was no indication the station owner was rude to her, just the attendant, Freddie Merdaa. Go back and read the story again.

Jessica White noticed the problem. She confronted the attendant. When the attendant was dismissive of her, she stayed at the pump and took a picture of it. She then called the police. When they arrived, the police called the weights and measures inspector who came out and condemned two of the pumps. She got a refund. And since we all now know about the story, it's obvious she went to the media, as the story (you know, the one at the link you provided) was reported by the local paper. The station in question was essentially identified to the public. The station then fell under closer scrutiny of the W&M inspector.

In my more than 13 months of participating in these forums, it's become painfully obvious to me that far too many people comment on stories posted here without even reading the stories (like 2amy, 1007, et al.), or just jump on some bandwagon without actually knowing what bandwagon they're jumping on. So let me ask you. You say the station owner needs an attitude adjustment, even though there's no proof the owner himself was rude to her. Assuming for a moment the owner's attitude was somehow reflected by the attendant's behavior, just what do you propose as an attitude adjustment for the owner? Should Jessica White gather up a posse to go in and break his kneecaps in true mafia style? Should his station be shut down? Should he be arrested? Banished from the state? Waterboarded? Sent to Gitmo? What? Please tell us.

With that in mind, go back and read the replies to your post that started this thread and tell me I'm wrong about posters' behaviors in these forums. I'll bet half never even clicked on the link, but commented anyways as though they did.

1007,

"Report this station"

Didn't read the link the OP provided, did you? If you had, you would have known the woman called the police, and when they arrived, they called a weights and measures inspector who condemned two of the pumps. And she even got a refund.

Problem solved.

One needs to call the local news paper to get them involved. Let them investigate it and get the truth out to the public. That would be the best punishment for the offending station.
