some GM vehicles i've driven would set the check engine light because the charcoal canister/evap system got flooded with gas instead of gas vapor

I wait until all the bubbles settle in the tank, and then I top off by squeezing the trigger JUST ONE MORE TIME. I think that it's better to have gas in the vehicle instead of bubbles.
However, the "second attempt to fill the gas tank" usually delivers something under a gallon before the "click." I never continue to pumping any more, since there is something wrong might happen (but I have forgotten what exactly). Maybe, it's something that was posted earlier about fouling sensors --> burning too much gas .

WOW! Becuase people are trying to figure out what the post was supposed to be about, the person that posted it wants to go and post things to their white board. How adult of you. You must be related to Snooki or "The Situation"!!! And people ask why I moved out of Jersey. It is uneducated immature people that have no idea how to show any respect to others. Just like you as a rookie here are going and posting unnecessary comments on peoples white boards. Go ahead. Be stupid and get kicked out. Then go learn how to type and spell.

I have been to many beaches around the world where tops were off and have yet to see anybody have a problem with their sensors...in fact, it seems to enhance their sensors! ;-)

I will top it off to the next whole dollar. For example, if it stops at $39.56 I will top it off at $40.00.

I'm pretty sure that putting in a few more drops of gas is not going to kill my fuel gauge. 25 years of doing it has yet to cause me any issues.

bonbNJ:

Can you explain what you mean by "this is not good for your gas tank related sensors;;;"? What happens to your gas related sensors if you top off?

I know the following is advised:

Topping off the gas tank can result in your paying for gasoline that is fed back into the station's tanks because your gas tank is full. The gas nozzle automatically clicks off when your gas tank is full. In areas of ozone nonattainment, gas station pumps are equipped with vapor recovery systems that feed back gas vapors into their tanks to prevent vapors from escaping into the air and contributing to air pollution. Any additional gas you try to pump into your tank may be drawn into the vapor line and fed back into the station’s storage tanks.

You need extra room in your gas tank to allow the gasoline to expand. If you top off your tank, the extra gas may evaporate into your vehicle’s vapor collection system. That system may become fouled and will not work properly causing your vehicle to run poorly and have high gas emissions. (And, obviously, you pay for gas that is spilled or evaporates.)

Topping off your gas tank may foul the station's vapor recovery system. Adding more gas after the nozzle has automatically shut off can cause the station's vapor recovery system to operate improperly. This contributes to the air pollution problem and may cause the gas pump to fail to work for the next person.

But I don't know what YOU mean by "this is not good for your gas tank related sensors." And I have no idea how your gas gauge will fail. Not based on what you've said.

just because a gauge fails, what makes you think it was due to "overfilling" the tank.

I always add another gallon of fuel to my tank after it shuts off but then my truck does not have all of them stupid sensors that gas vehicles do.
