I would like to know how my car will run on 100% gasoline. Is there anyway for a regular person can buy fuel without corn? I just read that the auto companies conduct their MPG tests with 100% gasoline and yet we have to use corny fuel.

Virgina actually has 189 stations that sell regular gas. Go to the Pure-gas.com site for the addresses.

Roadburner440 = Thanks for the followup. Searching using a different set of words, I found this:

Ford Engineer’s take on E85 (FFV's):

"In addition E85 requires shorter oil change intervals because of the additional H20 vapor being produced during combustion.”

DI if you look at the owners manual for any FlexFuel vehicle it specifies that if you actually run E85 in the vehicle that you must half all of the maintenance requirements. My father in law bought a Mercury Grand Marquise that was FlexFuel and found this out first hand. For factual guidelines on this see below... As far as my comment about Virginia it is what it is. I prefer low taxes, and everyone supporting themselves. I was shocked when I moved here to see the taxes on my grocery bill alone. Not to mention the roads are all tore up. So as far as I can tell the taxes are high, and the government keeps all the money to itself as they surely are not using it for infrastructure repair.. Back to the original point there are special procedures when using E85 in vehicles, and they are built for it. By the gov mandating higher E mixes in regular gas is probably going to cause increased fuel usage, and maintenance costs without any sort of decrease in price. Either way you just need to pull up an owners manual for any of these FlexFuel cars to see officially. Is bad stuff. Not to mention we are using land to grow fuel when we could be growing food, and we are using a crop that is not as efficient as others for producing ethanol.

If you want to find ethanol free gasoline, you should ask in your local forum.

The government specifies the specific fuel used to determine the EPA fuel economy numbers.

In most gasoline and diesel engines, a little unburned fuel gets by the rings into the engine oil. If you are burning straight gasoline, you will get some gasoline in your oil. If you are burning E-85, you get ethanol in your oil. If you are burning biodiesel, you get biodiesel in your oil. The gasoline and ethanol will eventually evaporate from the oil because it gets hot. If you get much ethanol or biodiesel in the oil it can cause problems.

Roadburner440 writes “Ethanol also contaminates your oil.”

Please explain. I’ve never heard this before and a search turned up nothing (either factual or opinion) other than references to MTBE (which ethanol replaced in gasoline) contaminating a number of water supplies.

BTW, as a former resident of the Commonwealth, I think you must be about the only person who thinks of such a conservative state as the “Communistwealth of Virginia”.

I noticed about a 6mpg gain using non-ethanol over ethanol gasoline... Ethanol also contaminates your oil. Which is why on vehicles that run E85 their oil changes are cut in half, along with their fuel economy being reduced quite a bit. When I was in Florida I used to run non-ethanol gas in our cars, but now that I am in the Communistwealth of Virginia it is illegal to sell it. The nearest station is a couple hundred miles away from me.

Just wait till they start mandating E15 and E20 (right now gasoline is E10).. it will further reduce your mileage costing you more money.

charladan:
If all you're going to do is try a few tankfuls, all you'll be doing is spending more money per gallon for a few tankfuls, and getting increased fuel economy for a few tankfuls. The increased price of one decreases the benefit of the other.

But unless yous are conducting professional testing, you (and your car) won't notice any real difference in performance.

Thanks for the responses. I was curious because of an article about the testing process for posting EPA mileage on new vehicles. They use 100% for the tests.
I have a 1994 Mercedes E320 and just wanted to try a few tankfuls.

It will run just fine on 100% gasoline. With the corn added it will tend to Snap, Popple and Crack. Which won't give you better mileage. But, it will make the gasoline taste better.

charladan - Expanding on Gas_Buddy's comment "you will also be paying a higher price per gallon, negating some of your savings, if not all of your of it."

Minnesota permits the sale of non-oxygenated gasoline (i.e., without ethanol) for use in lawnmowers, snowblowers, classic cars, etc. When this topic comes up locally, I'll make a pass through several stations that sell it to check the price differential, which is typically 30-60¢/gal. more than regular E10.

Also, if you have a modern (electronic fuel injected) engine, I'll suggest that you won't notice any difference between using E10 (10% ethanol) and E0 (0% ethanol). E10 has been mandatory in Minnesota since Oct. 1997. Back then, when I'd leave Minnesota I'd be filling up with E0 because E10 wasn't available elsewhere. I track my mileage every fill up and noticed no difference in when I was using E10 or E0.

There are so many variables that impact your fuel economy — weather conditions, driving patterns, even how full you get your tank — you're simply not going to be able to accurately detect any difference.

Quite frankly, I continue to be puzzled by why some are so opposed to using E10. (And I have no affiliation with any pro-ethanol group.)

Try the pure-gas.org website. If you can find pure gas you will get better mileage.

As a long time member posting in the national category, where your post will be read by everyone across the United States and Canada, rather than in your local discussion category where it will be seen by Virginia Gas Buddy members, and since you didn't identify an area where you want to buy it, I assume you're looking to buy non-ethanol gas across the United States and Canada.

You can buy ethanol-free gasoline in Jacksonville, Florida at the Gate station located at the intersection of Sunbeam Road and San Jose Blvd.

Does that help you?

As for how your car will run on 100 percent gasoline, it will run just as well as it does now, except you will get better fuel economy than you do now, but you will also be paying a higher price per gallon, negating some of your savings, if not all of your of it. Compared to different ethanol blends, you might find it easier to start your engine on very cold mornings (which you don't really have in Virginia, meaning you likely wouldn't notice any difference).

As for your question "Is there anyway for a regular person can buy fuel without corn?" I have no idea what you mean by "a regular person", but yes, if the gas stations sells ethanol-free gas, as they do at the gas station I named, anyone can buy it.

There is one on the corner of Main & Center Street. They have good roller dogs there too! Enjoy!
