Ford is doing well with it in a lot of vehicles. The marketing name is genius, yes, but the fact of the matter is that it is a great engine.

Kinda tough to move a 5000 lb. vehicle around and expect much more than 16-17 mpg. Maybe on the highway you might see 22 mpg at a steady 65 mph. Just my guess.

Ford ECOboost 6cyl like the old days and V8's but with gas savings! Good Job FORD!!!! ECOBoost has also put the F series pickups at the top of the sales lists by a large margin

The thing is you can get problems with anything. There have been people that have had problems with engines that have been out for many years. It happens. Sometimes you can just plain have bad luck with an automobile but it doesn't mean that it's not a good engine.

Have not heard any negative news on the Ecoboost motors, that one guy must think a 1.6L eco is suposed to be like a V8, most with the 3.5L ecoboost seem to feel it has more power than the 4.6L V* and better mpg's!

Let me summarize the improvements here with Ford's Eco-Boost engine:
The engine produces 365 hp and with the 2WD, the EPA rates it at 16/18/22 while the 4WD gets 15/17/21.
I chose to use a 2004 Ranger as a baseline just because my Ranger is from the 2004 model year.
The 2008-type EPA estimate for a 2004 Ranger with 5-spd auto, 4.0L V-6 and 4WD is 14/15/18. The Ranger engine produces 158 less horsepower and the truck weighs roughly a 1000 pounds less yet the Eco-Boost gets better mileage.
I don't think one can escape the fact that Ford has made substantial progress with their Eco-Boost engines.

maddog - One thing you have to look at as well is how much of his driving is in-town/city driving. If he isn't on the highway that much it's very possible that is the case.

No it isn't bad but you also have to look at the combined mileage from the EPA is figuring 45% highway and 55% city driving. Someone like me that drives 95% highway and 5% city should pull about 21.7 with it. Not much more than I used to get out of my 4.2 liter v-6 2001 F-150 with a 5-speed standard. I averaged 19.5 mpg overall and on a long trip could pull 23-24 mpg out of it. So sure it's a 11.2% increase but still not as much as I would have expected.

Drive gear ratios make a huge difference in mpg......something the manufacturer does not specify on the sticker.

I'll buy a full sized truck when they start putting small diesels in the 1500 series. I have no use for a 6 litre diesel in a 2 ton truck.

I have a 2004 Ford Ranger with a 4.0L engine, 5-spd and 4WD. The engine produces about 100 hp less and weighs less than the F-150 but it gets the same mileage so it's clear that things like Eco-Boost have definitely improved fuel efficiency.
There is no substitute for driving smart. Avoid hard stops/starts, minimize idle time and keep the vehicle properly maintained. People who do these things get better than EPA-estimate mileage.
If I were to take delivery of this truck, I would immediately convert it to true synthetic lubricants as a step towards long-term fuel efficiency.

It depends if it is 2WD or 4WD. The 2WD is rated at 16mpg city and 22 mpg highway. The 4WD is rated 15 mpg city and 17 mpg highway.

I actually just rented one a few weeks ago for a business trip. Had to drive about 5 hours on the highway. Driving 70-75 the whole way, best it could do was 18mpg. BUT i think it could have done better. It had 5000 miles on the engine, and I checked the oil on it when i stopped for gas and it was BLACK. Fricken Enterprise needs to take better care of their vehicles.
Im sure with a proper oil change an a high quality synthetic, in the same driving conditions, that truck could have pulled 20mpg easy on the highway. This was a supercrew 4x4, low end of the build spectrum. So it had regular 17" wheels and the smaller tires.
But I can see it being hard to get good mileage...the spool of the turbos is invigorating.

It really does make a difference what the driving is. Friend has an 8 cylinder F150 and he gets 15 on highway (maybe)... More like 11 - 13.
He indicated the eco engine actually has higher horse power than his v8!

The mpg sounds about right depending on how the truck is equipped and driven.
You might find your answer in the Ford category where others might have more incite.
