You can get the 2.0 TDI remapped.
My mate had his Jetta 2.0 TDI remapped from 140hp to 175hp.
The torque went up from 236ft/lb to 291ft/lb.

If you can increase pulse width and timing a bit, you will probably find the biggest gains in fuel economy.

Modifying a VW engine is endless whether its a gas 1.8, 2.0, 2.5,...or diesel 1.6 reg /tdi, 1.9 reg/tdi,...have fun
I have gone from 110hp to nearly 200hp on a 1.8 gas engine.

if you are trying to increase power and economy your best bets are a exhaust and a cool air intake these both reduce pumping losses and therefor make your engine more efficient. increasing efficiancy produces more power and better fuel economy given that u drive the vehicle the same as before the modifications. now most of the time people that do those modifications will tend to accellerate harder and drive faster they will actually reduce thier fuel milage. it doesent matter if it is diesel of gas powered making a few airflow improvements will always result in more power and economy

The new ones have nearly endless possibilities for modding.

I would not mess with the new ones. The older ones, I am sure there is things to be done.

Depends greatly on the year and engine placed within it. There are not really much modifications available for the newer Common Rail engines. Now if you have say 2004 BEW engine code then you could do a ventectomy, VAG-COM, Chip, injectors, mufflerectomy, etc. Ok that's all I could think about off the top of my head.

Come visit over at TDI Club. I promise no one bites.
