LOL, a popular myth. The carburetor was never an efficient engine management device. It's tough to beat a computer for fuel economy.

I say bring back the big bore 600 750 cfm carbs of the 60s and 70s along with 426 hemis with no computers and "polution" equipment (that doesn't work anyway) and lets have at it again.
those that want to drive "green" cars... not a problem..... just get the hell out of the way when a real car pulls up behind you.

There was never a carb. fitting any vehicle but might be truth in gas saving carbs (even the water/mist injection helped). Of course it could never be better than the direct injection of today, which should be the ultimate in gas mgmt savings.

Back when carbs were common and you really had 5 main choices, 2bbl, spread bore, square bore, single barrel and 4 hole 4bbl. That was the closest US auto makers ever came to standardizing air/fuel induction systems.

There are some carbs that did save some gas but the ones touted for 200 mpg in your 1950 Chevrolet somehow never were seen by living people. I will say that cars have improved quite a bit in my lifetime. In the sixties any car that could get more than 20 mpg on the highway was an economy car. Many cars would do well to get 15 mpg on the highway in the 60s. Now most cars get over 20 on the highway even big pickups. Economy cars make 35-40 mpg and the Prius gets 50 mpg.

I don't know if its a fluke or not but there have been stories and rumors of gas sipping carbs since the oil crisis in the 70's and earlier. Most of them involve a conspiracy by the automakers and oil industry to hide them from the public to protect their profit margins.
