How long would it take to pay for itself in the savings? Once the majority of these vehicles become the norm on the road, will they just up the price of electricity to surpass the price we pay for petroleum right now? What new technology is right around the corner to replace eletric cars?

I will wait 10 years and see if the infrastructure, price, and technology have improved. Meanwhile, my Honda Accord does just fine.

I wouldn't hesitate to buy one if they had a viable infrastructure and their recharge times were reduced, especially if you were on a trip.

10 Cars Mechanics Hate!

This one’s for you CactusBobs! However, I didn’t see a Fiat, Pinto, or Vega on the list?!

Personally I like a vehicle larger than a Prius but everything I read about the Prius is positive. Excellent mpg and excellent relibility. Price is low enough that it can be cost effective, especially if it is a base model for around $22,000. However, electric vehicles are another story. I don't see them as cost effective at present.

Electric cars are very expensive currently. with government incentives, and if you only plan to drive within the charge range, they can have some payback but to justify the cost is debatable.

Interesting 30K price on a Prius that is driven for 50K a year...

Why is it that there are so many Prius cabs? Odd since Cabs are used so much that you wouldn't think they would like to go running to the dealer to have them repaired when they have problems....

I never saw a vega or pinto cab....

An electric vehicle does not have a viable infrastructure to support it at the present time. They would only be a good choice in your immediate home area or a range of less than 75 miles per day.

Wait for the ones that use Energeon cubes. It's faster to "refill". :-)

I won't jump on the electric bandwagon, at least not yet.

CoolPriusGuy: Big deal theres's one out there . I am sure there's a 250,000 mile Vega or a Pinto or a Fiat .....big deal .....the reality is the car you own and that you want others to buy to is a total trap . DEALER THIS AND DEALER THAT . just because you have no idea how to repair cars and don't mind relying on the $100 an hour stelaership does not apply to everyone ......I still feel a car should be simple and easy to repair . parts should be easy and cheep to buy anywhere you please ( dealership , napa, autozone, checker ,pep boys ect) .... Prius is a trap , a dealership trap . in every way

“the car is a total money pit”

CR just reported a reader’s 2004 Prius only required a fan belt after 214,000 miles logged.

Yeah, CactusBobs...Prius is a real, “Money Pit!”

It's hard to win but you can ... this was done a few years back and it was about a Toyota Prius $30,000 car .... if you bought it NEW . drove it 50,000 miles a year , bought the extended warranty (150,000 mile) . and sold it in 3 years you win ! the resale on that car would be up to 75% of a new one ! ... now normal 10-15,000 miles per year . you can't win . the reasons are to much to type, but year after year it just gets worse . after ten years the car is a total money pit , warranty is gone but you still can ONLY have it repaired at the DEALER .....how deep are your pockets ?
